An 18-month-old girl tragically passed away after being left unattended inside a nursery transport vehicle for an extended period. The toddler, named Sofia, was picked up in Portugal for nursery at around 8 am but was inadvertently left inside the vehicle. The nursery staff only realized the child was missing when Sofia’s mother arrived later in the day to collect her and was informed that Sofia had not been in attendance.
Sofia’s grandmother mentioned that Sofia was consistently dropped off at the same time daily, and her arrival should have been documented. She expressed disbelief that there was no record of Sofia’s arrival that day. The incident occurred at a nursery in the Pragal area, although the vehicle was parked at a different site operated by the same institution on Avenida do Cristo Rei.
Emergency services, including firefighters, an INEM medical team, and PSP officers, responded to the scene. Despite efforts to resuscitate Sofia, she was pronounced dead at the location. The authorities are treating the case as a suspected incident of accidental negligence, with an investigation being initiated by Portugal’s Judicial Police.
The president of the Commission for the Protection of Crime Victims characterized the situation as a case of severe negligence rather than a deliberate act. He emphasized that the failure to check on all children in the transport vehicle and ensuring their safety was a critical oversight. The investigation will focus on the negligence involved and the lack of proper procedures in place.
The president also acknowledged the profound impact on all parties involved, including the educational institution, staff, and the family of the deceased child, who are considered the primary victims of this tragic event.
