Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has reported the unfortunate deaths of two beluga whales following the transfer of 10 belugas from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario. One of the whales, known as Rain, arrived from Marineland in mid-August, while the other, Beethoven, was already a resident at Shedd Aquarium.
Marineland, along with Shedd and several other aquariums, recently undertook a significant operation to relocate captive whales, successfully moving 30 belugas and four dolphins to five different destinations. Tragically, another beluga from Marineland, Peekachu, passed away last week due to severe dehydration.
Despite immediate efforts to save the whales, Shedd Aquarium confirmed the deaths of Rain and Beethoven on Wednesday afternoon. While it is uncertain if the deaths are connected, the aquarium is conducting tests and necropsies to investigate further.
