“TikTok Fraudster Escapes Paying £56k Damages”

A fraudulent individual on TikTok has managed to avoid compensating for causing damage worth £56,000 during a vengeful act, as per reports. Leigh Sutherland, who is currently serving a nine-year sentence for a fatal car crash that claimed the life of a grandmother, engaged in peculiar online behavior by posing as a lawyer and police officer, telling his followers that there is a defense for every offense.

Sutherland, aged 32, received another sentence after confessing to participating in vandalizing a house and garage amidst a family dispute. The incident led to extensive destruction at a property in Mollinsburn, North Lanarkshire. Appearing via video link from prison, Sutherland, a resident of Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, faced court proceedings on Friday.

His co-defendant, Stephen McGlynn, aged 49, was convicted following a trial. The targeted property belonged to a relative of McGlynn. According to the court, Sutherland, McGlynn, and unidentified accomplices caused damage to fixtures, fittings, and walls within the house, in addition to harming a garage, fencing, and an external wall.

Despite defense solicitor Simon Gilmour mentioning that Sutherland is not set for release until 2034, Sheriff Paul Haran sentenced him to eight months in prison concurrently with his existing term, implying no additional time will be served behind bars. The sheriff cited the necessity of custody due to Sutherland’s circumstances.

McGlynn, who is reliant on state benefits, was instructed to pay £12,000 in compensation to the homeowner through monthly installments of £500. However, Sheriff Haran acknowledged Sutherland’s inability to provide compensation. Additionally, McGlynn received a six-month electronic tagging order, restricting him to stay at home from 7 pm to 7 am, with the sheriff expressing hope that this legal issue within his family would not recur.

Earlier this year, Sutherland was sentenced at the High Court for causing the death of 77-year-old Margaret Allan in a reckless driving incident. The court revealed that Sutherland was speeding in a Ford Mondeo with faulty brakes when he collided with Mrs. Allan’s Peugeot 108 in Cumbernauld in June 2023. Mrs. Allan sustained severe injuries and passed away three weeks later, while a 10-year-old boy accompanying her was hospitalized.

At the time of the crash, Sutherland was driving at least 44mph in a 40mph zone. Following the collision, he left the scene, alleging the need to clear his head when confronted by a passing police officer. He wrongly attributed the accident to Mrs. Allan and falsely claimed that a Romanian man was test-driving his car. Subsequent investigations revealed defects in the vehicle’s braking system and battery.
