A new era in Canadian basketball is set to begin with the unveiling of a cutting-edge national basketball facility in Etobicoke, Ontario. The federal government is poised to announce a significant $76 million investment in this state-of-the-art community center located at Humber Polytechnic’s North Campus. The facility, known as “The Hub,” will feature six gyms for provincial, national, and international competitions, alongside a high-performance training center and Canada Basketball’s national operations headquarters.
Furthermore, the federal government is committed to providing 32,000 hours of community use annually at the facility. To support the construction of this groundbreaking site, Canada Basketball will partner with Humber to launch a private donor campaign offering naming rights opportunities. In addition, contributions from Humber Capital and student fee allocations, along with potential involvement from the provincial government, will further bolster the funding.
This investment in Canada Basketball is part of the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF), a 10-year, $51 billion initiative aimed at enhancing Canadian infrastructure. The government’s support for sports facilities extends to other projects, including planning for a Canada Soccer national facility and the renovation of Calgary’s Olympic oval, among others.
The official announcement event at Humber will host key figures such as Adam Van Koeverden, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, federal MP John Zerucelli, Canada Basketball’s President and CEO Mike Bartlett, and Humber Polytechnic’s President and CEO Ann Marie Vaughan. Notable Canadian basketball figures, including RJ Barrett, Kelly Olynyk, Michelle Plouffe, and Yvonne Ejim, are expected to attend the event.
Despite Canada’s strong presence in the global basketball scene, both the men’s and women’s teams have faced challenges in achieving significant success on the world stage. While the men’s team secured a historic bronze at the 2023 World Cup and made a long-awaited return to the Olympics in 2024, the women’s team has yet to earn an Olympic medal despite consistent high rankings. Canada’s basketball talent continues to shine, with numerous players making their mark in the NBA and WNBA, positioning the country as a force to be reckoned with in the basketball world.
