“Teens Seeking Rehab for Social Media Addiction”

Children as young as 14 are now seeking treatment for addiction to social media, according to a prominent rehabilitation expert. The surge in cases involves youngsters grappling with compulsive use of popular apps like TikTok and Instagram. Jan Gerber, the founder of Paracelsus Recovery, a renowned clinic, highlighted the concerning trend, labeling it as a widespread issue.

Gerber pointed out that the addictive nature of social media platforms is exacerbated by algorithms that exploit the brain’s reward system, particularly through dopamine-triggering activities like accumulating likes and comments. He emphasized the vulnerability of young, developing brains to such stimuli, likening the experience to a potent digital stimulant.

While parents have sought help for even younger children, Gerber noted legal restrictions on treating those under 14 at his facility. He also raised alarm over the rise of youth fixated on online gaming, leading to excessive spending on in-game purchases. These practices, he likened to a gambling-like experience designed to foster addiction.

Recognizing the challenges in addressing social media addiction, Gerber discussed innovative treatment methods like using play-style cards to help young patients manage and express their emotions. In response to the growing concerns, Australia recently enforced a ban on social media for those under 16, with similar actions proposed by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

While Gerber doubted the efficacy of a complete ban, he advocated for governmental interventions such as limiting screen time to curb excessive usage among children. He stressed the importance of external regulation in the absence of self-control measures to combat the escalating issue.
