A young adult generously donated his organs to save the lives of three individuals after experiencing a severe epileptic seizure.
Patrick Leonard, 18, decided to become an organ donor after being inspired by his school’s head of Sixth Form, who shared his own experience as a donor with the charity Anthony Nolan. Patrick expressed his desire to help others through organ donation in the event of his passing.
Tragically, on August 26 of the previous year, Patrick suffered a catastrophic seizure that left him brain dead in the hospital. His selfless act helped three people on the transplant list: a man in his 20s received his lungs, while a man in his 40s and a woman in her 50s each received one of his kidneys.
Patrick’s father, Christopher, expressed pride in his son’s decision to donate his organs, emphasizing that honoring Patrick’s wishes provided comfort to the family during the difficult time. The family received a heartfelt letter of gratitude from one of the recipients, underscoring the impact of Patrick’s generosity.
In 2023, Patrick had been inspired to become a donor after attending a school assembly where a teacher shared his own donation story. Despite his own health challenges, Patrick was eager to give back but was later diagnosed with epilepsy, which impacted his life significantly.
Despite diligent medical care and treatment for his epilepsy, Patrick continued to experience seizures, leading to missed school days and a shift to online learning. His family noted his resilience and gratitude for the life he had.
In August 2025, Patrick’s family faced the devastating reality of his condition when he experienced a fatal seizure at home. Despite their shock and grief, they found solace in knowing that Patrick had wanted to help others through organ donation.
Patrick’s untimely death shed light on the risks associated with epilepsy, particularly the potential for Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). His family advocated for organ donation awareness in his memory, raising funds for the Anthony Nolan Trust and continuing his legacy of giving.
SUDEP Action highlighted the connection between epilepsy and depression, emphasizing the need for awareness and support for those living with the condition. An inquest into Patrick’s passing attributed his death to SUDEP, revealing the harsh reality of the risks associated with epilepsy.
The introduction of Max and Keira’s Law in 2020 marked a significant milestone in organ donation legislation, promoting a culture of presumed consent unless individuals opt out. This groundbreaking law aimed to increase organ donation rates and provide hope to those in need of life-saving transplants.
