A teenager facing charges related to a bomb hoax incident that led to the evacuation of a Peter Kay comedy show caused a disruption during a court hearing by attempting to undress. Omar Majed, 19, was participating in the proceedings remotely from HMP Brinsford when he started removing his prison-issued clothing, prompting his removal from the video-link session at Birmingham Crown Court.
Judge Andrew Smith KC was addressing Majed regarding the scheduling of future court appearances, as the defendant had not yet entered a plea due to the requirement for psychiatric evaluations. However, the judge was forced to cut short his communication with Majed and noted on the court record that prison staff had intervened to escort the defendant out of the virtual hearing room.
Majed, a resident of Saltley, Birmingham, was charged with conveying false information to the police under the Criminal Law Act. A case management hearing for him was scheduled for July 27, with a potential trial set to begin on November 3 and last for two weeks.
The incident at Utilita Arena in Birmingham on May 1 led to the evacuation of the venue during Kay’s performance, resulting in the show’s cancellation. West Midlands Police confirmed that no suspicious items were discovered following searches. The police clarified that the evacuation was initiated in response to a report of a suspicious bag, and they appreciated the public’s cooperation and understanding, emphasizing public safety as their top priority.
Peter Kay’s national tour, “Better Late Than Never,” which includes charity donations to 12 cancer organizations, was affected by the evacuation incident at the Birmingham show.
