A recent series of studies has indicated that ice-strengthened cargo ships can safely sail through Hudson Bay beyond the traditional four-month Port of Churchill shipping season. However, the studies caution that ice will persist in the bay and present challenges in the upcoming years, even under the most pessimistic global warming scenarios. The research, aimed at exploring the feasibility of extending the Port of Churchill’s shipping season, highlights the variability of ice conditions from year to year, leading to uncertainties regarding ice thickness and vessel requirements for navigation.
Furthermore, one of the studies questions the capability of ice-hardened ships carrying full loads of liquid natural gas to navigate the entrance of the Churchill River. These study findings will offer valuable insights to the government of Manitoba as it seeks to attract investors for a significant project to enhance the Port of Churchill and upgrade the Hudson Bay Railway.
Arctic Gateway Group, in collaboration with shipping firm Fednav, conducted the study to assess the potential for year-round shipping operations at the Port of Churchill. The study indicates that with ice-strengthened freighters, extending the shipping season in Churchill is viable today, with the possibility of year-round access in the future.
Despite the positive outlook, Fednav has cautioned about the uncertainties posed by the dynamic ice conditions in Hudson Bay and the challenges associated with navigating the shallow and narrow approach to the Port of Churchill within the Hudson Bay estuary. The company suggests that further field studies, probe voyages, and simulation-based assessments are needed to address these uncertainties and make informed decisions about extending the shipping season or enabling year-round shipping operations.
Estimates from the Arctic Research Foundation suggest that acquiring ice-strengthened vessels of the third-toughest class could range from $280 million to $410 million, while vessels of the fourth-toughest class would cost between $100 million and $130 million. These costs are considerably lower than the investment required for multi-billion-dollar icebreakers capable of traversing the thickest multi-year ice in the Arctic Ocean.
Fednav also highlighted the current limitations in depth along the approach shoal, estuary, and berths, indicating that significant dredging, infrastructure modifications, or the development of an offshore loading facility would be necessary before deploying such vessels at Churchill.
Additionally, a separate study led by a team of academics, including sea ice expert Feiyue Wang from the University of Manitoba, predicts that Hudson Bay will still have ice even if the global average temperature increases by five degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century. Current climate projections suggest a 3.4-degree Celsius rise in global temperatures within the same timeframe.
