A man under the influence of alcohol, who was speeding and caused a fatal crash that resulted in the death of his teenage passenger, has been sentenced to prison. The tragic incident occurred when 19-year-old Erin Slane, who sent a distressing message just before the accident, accepted a ride from 23-year-old Kyle Patrick in his Ford Fiesta on September 1, 2024.
Patrick was driving at excessive speeds of up to 119mph on a secluded road in Perthshire, Scotland, while Erin, in fear, messaged her friends about the situation. The car lost control on the B9099 Luncarty to Stanley road, rolling multiple times before coming to a stop after tumbling down a grass embankment into a field.
Unfortunately, Erin Slane lost her life in the crash, while Patrick and another friend, Keira Jones, survived. Patrick pleaded guilty to causing Erin’s death by dangerous driving and has been sentenced to eight years in prison after a court hearing in Edinburgh.
Investigations revealed that Patrick had been drinking with friends in Perth city center before the accident and had offered rides to several individuals. The court was informed that Patrick drove at excessive speeds while impaired, leading to the tragic outcome.
During sentencing, the judge emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that Patrick’s actions had caused immense pain to Erin’s family. The judge highlighted that Erin was a young woman with a promising future, and Patrick’s reckless behavior had shattered those prospects. Additionally, Patrick admitted to driving while impaired by alcohol and offering rides to others on the day of the incident.
