Two sisters were seen smiling as they were taken into custody by the police following the brutal murder of a mother of five. Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, and Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, were apprehended in Del Rio, Texas, close to the Mexican border, shortly after the fatal stabbing of Caroline Peña. In a video captured outside their residence, Kitty was observed grinning as officers escorted her to a police vehicle on Thursday afternoon.
Amaya was also seen laughing after reportedly telling a camera to stop recording. Another individual, Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, was also arrested in connection with the homicide, according to the Del Rio Police Department.
According to a spokesperson from the Del Rio Police Department, on June 25, 2026, at around 2:10 p.m., officers responded to a report of a female victim with multiple stab wounds at Val Verde Regional Medical Center. The incident was determined to have taken place on East 10th Street. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, the victim was transported to a medical facility in San Antonio for urgent care.
The motive behind the killing has not been disclosed publicly yet. Surveillance footage has been gathered, and multiple witnesses have been interviewed by investigators. The Del Rio Police Department confirmed that Kitty Mia Diaz, Amaya Cookie Diaz, and Kyandra Renee Faz were all located and apprehended without incident. Subsequently, all three suspects were taken to the Del Rio Police Department for processing.
Later that evening, it was reported that the victim had passed away from her injuries. Following her death, Faz and the Diaz sisters were charged with murder and taken to the GEO Correctional Facility for further legal proceedings. Independent journalist Michael Elizondo recounted witnessing the arrest, noting the unusual behavior of one of the suspects who appeared to be in a jovial mood despite the circumstances.
