“Shelter-in-Place Issued at Fireweed Festival Amid Armed Suspect Search”

At around 3 a.m. on Saturday, the RCMP issued a shelter-in-place directive for Fort Smith, N.W.T., in response to a search for an armed male suspect. The Fireweed Festival NT organizers posted on social media about a “serious incident” involving a firearm at the Dirty O’Fergies pub during the festival’s kickoff event. They mentioned injuries to several individuals, pending confirmation from law enforcement.

Law enforcement is actively seeking the armed male suspect, described as wearing a grey sweater. A community portal has been set up by the police for the public to provide digital evidence from witnesses. Residents have been instructed to remain indoors, avoid opening doors for strangers, and refrain from sharing pictures of responding officers on social platforms.

Jared Monkman from CBC is present in Fort Smith for live broadcasting of ‘The Weekender’ from the festival. The show is still scheduled to commence at 6 a.m. MT, accessible via radio or CBC Listen. The Fort Smith Health Centre is currently open solely for emergency services, operating under lockdown and mass casualty procedures. Residents are urged to call in advance before seeking medical assistance.

Celebrating its fifth year, the Fireweed Festival NT is a community event spotlighting music, culture, and interactive workshops. It promotes inclusivity and community engagement through live performances and various activities.
