A cargo aircraft with five crew members onboard has vanished near the coast of Pakistan after losing communication with air traffic control while en route from the United Arab Emirates.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan has initiated search and rescue operations in the Arabian Sea following the disappearance of the aircraft late Tuesday night. The reason behind the incident remains unknown at this time.
The Boeing 737, operated by K2 Airways based in Karachi, was en route from Sharjah to Karachi when the crew informed of a navigation system problem around 9.18pm local time.
Reports from the Civil Aviation Authority indicate that radar data displayed a sudden drop in altitude of the aircraft followed by a sharp turn a few minutes later. Contact with the plane was lost at approximately 9.21pm when it was located about 155 nautical miles west of Karachi.
Efforts are ongoing to locate the aircraft and its five crew members as authorities strive to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.
There is currently no confirmed explanation for the incident.
Officials have confirmed only that the crew reported a navigation system issue shortly before losing contact. Investigators will analyze flight data, communications, and any recovered wreckage to establish the sequence of events.
Search and rescue teams, including Pakistan’s navy, air force, and emergency responders, have been dispatched to the Arabian Sea to aid in the operation.
The last known position of the aircraft was roughly 287 kilometers west of Karachi.
