Russian Warship Fires Warning Shots at British Yacht

A British couple sailing in the English Channel on their yacht, Bright Future, were startled when warning shots were discharged by a Russian warship, the Admiral Grigorovich. Jane Kelvey, 68, and Alan Kelvey, 70, alleged that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) was attempting to suppress their account of the incident. The MoD defended the warship’s actions, stating that the shots were fired as a precautionary measure due to the yacht’s proximity to the frigate, and that radio attempts were made to contact the couple.

Disputing the MoD’s explanation, Mr. Kelvey refuted claims that they were contacted via radio and dismissed the suggestion of poor visibility or flares being used. The Kelveys departed from Lymington, Hampshire, en route to Cherbourg, France, when the altercation occurred outside UK territorial waters.

The Russian Defence Ministry contended that the yacht was on a hazardous path, necessitating warning signals before resorting to firing shots in accordance with maritime laws. The incident unfolded against a backdrop of heightened tensions between Britain and Russia, exacerbated by the recent seizure of the tanker Smyrtos.

Sir Keir Starmer, commenting on the G7 summit in France, criticized the incident as reckless but aligned with the MoD’s assessment that it was a drifting vessel. Responding to allegations of silencing the Kelveys’ narrative, a Downing Street spokesperson characterized the event as an “isolated incident,” reaffirming the UK’s willingness to confront Russian provocations when necessary.
