“RSPCA Warns: Watch for Heatstroke Signs in Pets”

The RSPCA has alerted pet owners to be cautious of signs of heatstroke in animals that may appear as normal behavior. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals advises extra vigilance during warmer weather as pets can easily become overheated, with symptoms sometimes mistaken for regular tiredness. The organization’s message, posted on its website, comes as temperatures in London are expected to reach 37C today, with a red warning for extreme heat in other parts of the UK.

Experts emphasize that panting is a crucial indicator of heatstroke in dogs. While some owners may overlook it as typical in hot conditions, it should be treated seriously. If a dog shows signs of heatstroke, immediate steps should be taken to cool them down and provide access to water to avoid further complications.

Recognizing symptoms of heatstroke in dogs is essential, with certain breeds at higher risk according to the animal welfare charity. The RSPCA cautions against placing damp towels directly over a dog’s body as it can trap heat. Instead, wet towels can be placed beneath the dog and frequently re-wetted to aid in cooling. In cases of overheating, cooling the dog before transport is crucial to prevent worsening symptoms.

The charity emphasizes the importance of acting promptly to cool an overheated dog to prevent potential health risks, even death. Keeping calm, focusing on the dog, and ensuring their immediate cooling are highlighted as crucial steps to aid in their recovery and potentially save their life.
