Frankie Dettori, a renowned figure in horse racing, was swiftly taken to the hospital after a harrowing incident where his car overturned. The retired Italian jockey was in Newmarket, Suffolk, when his vehicle was struck by another, resulting in a severe car crash and leaving him with multiple injuries.
Reports from his representatives indicate that the car spun and flipped over after being hit on the rear passenger side. Emergency services promptly responded, and Dettori was subsequently transported to the hospital.
At 55 years old, Dettori received medical attention for a fractured thumb and several broken ribs. He is currently hospitalized for further monitoring.
H Talent Management, Dettori’s representatives, issued a statement confirming the accident, detailing how another vehicle collided with the rear of Dettori’s car, causing it to spin and flip. The statement mentioned his broken ribs and thumb, emphasizing that his condition is still under evaluation as he undergoes additional scans and observation in the hospital.
Dettori, known for his remarkable career spanning nearly four decades, decided to retire earlier this year. His legacy includes being a three-time British flat racing Champion Jockey and winning 288 Grade 1 races, solidifying his status as a racing legend.
One of Dettori’s most notable achievements was at Ascot in 1996, where he achieved the extraordinary feat of riding all seven winners at the race meeting. His last race in Britain was in October 2023, concluding with a victory aboard King Of Steel at Ascot.
After retiring following the Breeders’ Cup in the United States in November 2025, Dettori now resides in California with his family. Notably, this is not the first time he has been involved in a vehicular incident, as he previously survived a plane crash in 2000, which resulted in injuries to his ankle and thumb.
Authorities at the time labeled his survival as a “miracle,” launching a thorough investigation into the crash. It was later determined that a propeller hitting the ground during take-off caused the plane to crash and catch fire.
In light of this recent event, H Talent Management has requested privacy for Dettori as he focuses on recuperation. Further updates will be provided when significant developments occur.
