“Red Arrows Debut New 7-Aircraft Formation”

The Red Arrows recently debuted a groundbreaking new formation, showcasing seven aircraft instead of their traditional nine at the English Riviera Airshow in Torquay, Devon. This change was made to extend the lifespan of the aging BAE Systems Hawk T1s used by the skilled pilots in their daring maneuvers. The Red Arrows will continue to fly in their signature nine-aircraft formation for special events like The King’s Birthday Flypast and the 4th of July celebrations in the US this year.

The decision to reduce the number of aircraft in displays comes as the Red Arrows seek to manage their fleet of Hawk T1 aircraft, which are now scheduled to remain in service until 2030. The Hawk T1 planes require extensive maintenance, with spare parts and critical components, especially engines, becoming increasingly scarce over time.

An RAF spokesperson emphasized the Red Arrows’ global reputation for precision, speed, and teamwork, stating that the team will fly with seven aircraft for most displays to ensure the sustainable management of the Hawk T1 fleet and prepare for a transition to a new aircraft type. While the team historically flew seven aircraft in the 1960s and in certain display seasons, they will be showcasing their skills at air shows and events across the UK, Europe, and beyond from May to October this year.

In a related development, Aeralis Ltd, a potential manufacturer for the next generation of Red Arrows aircraft, recently faced financial challenges leading to its administration. This was attributed to ongoing delays in the UK Defence Investment Plan and geopolitical factors affecting funding.
