British authorities have confiscated 12 tons of cannabis valued at approximately £139 million in what is believed to be the largest seizure of the drug by the Border Force.
The Home Office reported that approximately 1,200 boxes of cannabis were discovered crammed into two shipping containers at Southampton Port, which had originated from Canada. Home Office intelligence analysts collaborated with Canadian authorities and UK law enforcement to pinpoint the two containers en route to Southampton.
The interception of the delivery occurred on May 6, according to the Home Office. The seized drugs constitute the largest cannabis confiscation by the Border Force to date, surpassing the previous record set in 2017 by four tons.
Migration minister Mike Tapp commended the Border Force officers for their exceptional work, stating, “Congratulations to our outstanding Border Force officers for this groundbreaking seizure.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing criminal organizations from profiting from illegal activities and endangering public safety.
The Home Office announced that the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit arrested three individuals suspected of facilitating the importation on Tuesday. This collaborative effort underscores the ongoing commitment to safeguarding borders and communities from illicit activities.
