Denmark’s previous queen has been hospitalized once again, just a week after undergoing treatment for a heart attack. Queen Margrethe was readmitted to a hospital in Copenhagen after it was disclosed that she had developed a blood clot on her hip due to an earlier fall. This development comes shortly after the Danish Royal Palace confirmed she had been receiving care following the heart attack, raising concerns about her well-being.
A statement released stated that Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet for treatment of a significant blood clot in her hip area, a consequence of a previous fall. Her hospitalization is anticipated to last several days, with reports indicating that she is in stable condition.
Following the news of her mother’s health setback, King Frederik of Denmark mentioned at a fun run event that he would visit Queen Margrethe when possible. Queen Mary, her daughter-in-law, assured reporters that the surgery had been successful and went as planned, emphasizing that the queen was in good care.
Queen Margrethe, who reigned as Denmark’s longest-serving monarch, abdicated in January 2024 after 52 years on the throne, passing her responsibilities to her eldest son, now-King Frederik. Her decision to step down was influenced by health considerations, as she had previously indicated.
During her New Year’s Eve address in 2023, Queen Margrethe stated, “The surgery naturally prompted thoughts about the future – whether it was time to transfer the responsibility to the next generation.” She further announced her abdication, effective January 14, 2024, marking the end of her reign that started 52 years earlier.
Shortly after abdicating, Queen Margrethe was hospitalized following a fall at her residence. According to the head of communications, Lene Balleby, the queen’s condition was stable, and she was under observation at the time.
Throughout her reign, Queen Margrethe undertook 42 official state visits within Denmark and conducted 55 foreign state visits. She holds the distinction of being the most recent female reigning monarch globally.
Known for her unconventional approach, Queen Margrethe was a creative and outspoken individual who did not shy away from giving her subjects a stern talking-to when necessary, all while displaying an imaginatively eccentric style.
In 2024, Queen Margrethe created history by becoming Denmark’s first monarch to abdicate in nearly nine centuries, passing the throne to her son due to health issues that limited her previous level of activity.
