Premier Danielle Smith refrained from discussing provincial separation on the occasion of Alberta’s entry into Confederation, highlighting Canada’s acknowledgment of the province’s significance. Speaking at Calgary’s Heritage Park, Smith emphasized Alberta’s role as Canada’s economic powerhouse and the global demand for its resources.
Celebrating Alberta’s official induction as a Canadian province on September 1, 1905, various events unfolded over the weekend leading up to the province’s upcoming birthday. Despite calling for a vote on October 19 regarding Alberta’s future in Canada, Smith avoided delving into the topic during the celebration focused on the province’s integration into the country.
In her address, Smith emphasized unity, stating, “Despite our differences, we share more common ground than divisions. Alberta’s narrative is ongoing, with promising chapters ahead.” Attendees at the event, many waving Alberta and Canadian flags distributed annually, were reminded by Lindsey Galloway, Heritage Park President, that the occasion should not be politicized.
While a tent advocating for Alberta independence was present, most attendees, predominantly families, refrained from discussing the subject when prompted. Myra McClelland, however, voiced her support for Alberta’s independence, underscoring the importance of the province having a voice.
Campaign activities intensified ahead of the referendum, with Alberta separatists gathering in Edmonton to advocate for secession, while opposition leader Naheed Nenshi held a “Vote for Canada” rally in Calgary. Calls to postpone the referendum due to escalating trade tensions with the United States were made by Thomas Lukaszuk, organizer of the pro-federalist Forever Canadian petition.
Smith affirmed her stance on Alberta remaining in Canada, acknowledging the diverse views within the province. Despite challenges stemming from disagreements with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Smith emphasized the need for dialogue and unity, urging Albertans to participate in the upcoming referendum.
In a recent interview, Smith addressed concerns about the timing of the referendum amid trade disputes, drawing parallels between Albertans’ grievances with Trudeau and sentiments in Quebec and Ontario. She highlighted efforts to mend relationships and emphasized the importance of addressing issues rather than ignoring them to foster a stronger future for Alberta within Confederation.
