Diners at a restaurant in Birmingham faced a terrifying ordeal when a violent attacker assaulted a pregnant woman, leading to a chaotic scene at Al-Qamar restaurant on Vincent Street in Balsall Heath. The pregnant woman sought refuge in the restaurant, seeking help from other diners, including Akilah Bennett and her family, who were preparing to leave the establishment.
Shortly after the woman entered the restaurant, a man brandishing a baseball bat appeared outside. Initially, there was confusion as to the relationship between the attacker and the woman, but it became clear that they were not acquainted. Ms. Bennett recounted the harrowing experience, stating that her uncle courageously shielded the woman from the attacker, who seemed disoriented and aggressive.
Despite efforts to deter the attacker, he returned armed with a knife, prompting Ms. Bennett and her cousin to quickly secure the restaurant and protect everyone inside. The tense situation finally de-escalated when the attacker eventually departed. Law enforcement and medical services arrived promptly, but the moments leading up to their arrival felt prolonged and intense.
Reflecting on the incident, Ms. Bennett expressed disappointment that such a frightening event disrupted what had been a pleasant dining experience, praising the restaurant staff for their handling of the situation. West Midlands Police confirmed the incident occurred on July 14 just before 10 pm on Vincent Street, involving a serious assault on a woman and threats to members of the public who intervened.
