Videos capturing buildings collapsing and locals screaming in fear have circulated on social media today following a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Philippines. The earthquake, which hit near Mindanao, triggered a tsunami alert for the region. The tremor was felt in Davao City around 7.40 am local time on Monday, June 8, 2026, prompting residents to evacuate buildings as a precaution.
Tsunami warnings have been issued for several areas, including the Philippines, the West coast of the United States, Indonesia, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea. While footage of collapsing structures spread online, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has lifted the tsunami watch for its coastline and territories. The cancellation came from the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) at 10.38 am AEST.
The BoM confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.8 near Mindanao and stated that no tsunami threat exists for Australia. In a statement, they mentioned that no tsunami waves endanger the Australian mainland, islands, or territories, leading to the cancellation of the tsunami watch. Updates will only be provided if the situation changes.
One video shows the Plaza building, home to LOVE Radio Gensan and DZRH News FM, collapsing dramatically during the earthquake in Sarangani. Pedestrians on the street nearby can be heard screaming as dust clouds the area.
