Carney interacted with volunteers from the Forever Canadian campaign in Banff, Alberta, during the federal cabinet retreat’s closing day. Supporters, with red and white signs and maple leaf symbols, welcomed the prime minister, who inscribed “Canada is everyone and for everyone” on the campaign’s bright pink recreational vehicle.
A referendum is scheduled for October 19 in Alberta to decide on a potential second vote regarding separation from Canada. Carney, emphasizing national unity, highlighted the importance of voting and early participation in the upcoming referendum.
Lukaszuk anticipated a more involved approach from the prime minister as the campaign progresses, expressing hope for increased support from federal Conservatives. The Federal government, while meeting with Alberta mayors during their Alberta retreat, did not outline plans to actively engage in the remain campaign.
Minister Eleanor Olszewski emphasized the federal government’s role as a collaborative partner with Alberta, focusing on building a unified country. Olszewski reiterated the government’s stance on encouraging Albertans to vote to remain part of Canada, emphasizing the importance of showcasing Canada’s effectiveness as a nation.
Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas commended Carney’s cabinet for their efforts and presence in Alberta, emphasizing their engagement with various communities and their willingness to listen and support common causes.
