A tragic incident unfolded in Croatia as a plane crashed, resulting in the loss of at least four lives. The aircraft went down near Medulin, a town situated on the Istria peninsula, as confirmed by a police statement. Images from the scene depict the wreckage of the small plane in a field, surrounded by emergency response teams.
Reports from the official HINA news agency revealed that the ill-fated plane was of German origin, having departed from Austria with its destination set for Medulin. The crash took place around 11:20 am local time in the Campanoz region, between Kastijun and Medulin, close to the Medulin airport. There are speculations of two additional individuals onboard besides the confirmed four fatalities.
Eyewitness Nijaz Delic, a local pilot, recounted to the Index news portal that the plane spiraled in the air before tragically crashing to the ground. The exact number of occupants remains unknown, with authorities withholding further details, including the identities of the victims.
The downed aircraft has been identified as a Bonanza G36 plane, with ongoing investigations aimed at determining the cause of the crash. Aviation expert Zeljko Marusic, speaking to Croatian news outlet Glas Istre, highlighted that a spiral dive is an extremely perilous situation at low altitudes due to the simultaneous increase in speed, structural stress, and rate of altitude descent.
Unlike a typical spin, a spiral dive renders the aircraft typically uncontrollable, raising questions about how the plane entered such a state. Mr. Marusic emphasized that spiral dives in general aviation usually stem from preceding factors such as technical malfunctions, spatial disorientation, speed misjudgments, or abrupt responses to unforeseen circumstances.
He further noted that the final moments of flight for smaller aircraft are critical, offering pilots minimal time to react with minimal altitude safety margins. The investigation will delve into the sequence of events leading to the plane’s tragic descent.
