Alex Ovechkin has experienced significant changes over his 22 seasons in the NHL. This transformation was evident during his final home opener, where his sons Sergei and Ilya proudly announced his entry onto the ice. The Washington Capitals triumphed over the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday night, as Ovechkin, aged 41, received a standing ovation after revealing that this season would be his last.
Describing the experience, Ovechkin expressed, “It was a pretty cool moment. A huge crowd, kids announcing my name. It was a special moment.” Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Ovechkin did not add to his record 929 career goals that night, and notably, he was absent during a crucial period when the Penguins removed their goalie. This game marked the 101st encounter between Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, with neither player contributing a point, a rarity per Sportradar data.
Crosby, on the other hand, ended the game with a minus-4 rating after being present for all four of Washington’s even-strength goals. The Capitals’ roster now boasts significant depth, allowing Ovechkin to share power-play responsibilities with his talented teammates. Coach Spencer Carbery acknowledged, “He also is understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish as a team, and the great players that he has around him.”
While Ryan Leonard scored Washington’s lone power-play goal, Ovechkin remained a focal point of the game. During the player introductions, he was the last to be presented, escorted by his children, creating a memorable moment for all in attendance. Reflecting on the event, Carbery remarked, “I had no idea any of that was happening… I think they nailed that moment. Special for I think everybody in the building.”
Though Ovechkin registered two shots on goal and witnessed Anthony Beauvillier secure an early 1-0 lead for Washington, it was teammate Tom Wilson who shone with a goal and two assists. Wilson praised Ovechkin, stating, “It’s been such an incredible journey. Cool to see his kids down there… He’s a legend in this city, so I think everyone had a big smile. You get chills watching him come out.”
