Olympic Gold Medalist Claire Thompson Retires for Medical Career

One of the leading female hockey players in Canada has decided to retire from the sport in order to pursue a career in medicine. Claire Thompson, a defender, made the announcement of her retirement through an Instagram post and an exclusive interview with The Athletic. Hailing from Toronto and aged 28, Thompson achieved Olympic success by clinching gold for Canada at the 2022 Beijing Games and silver at the recent Milan event. Notably, she set a new Olympic record for defender points in Beijing, tallying 13 points, and concluded her Olympic career with a total of 17 points across 14 games. In a remarkable career, Thompson also secured the Walter Cup while playing for the Minnesota Frost in the PWHL in 2025 and later joined the Vancouver Goldeneyes last season. Returning to her studies at NYU medical school, Thompson aims to specialize in orthopedic surgery.
