Pub landlord Frank Collins recently celebrated his 97th birthday with a few pints, claiming the title of the oldest barkeeper in the country. Taking over the family business at 68, Frank expressed his intention to continue serving behind the bar as long as he finds joy in it, citing the camaraderie he enjoys.
The legacy of the Dog & Partridge pub in Sowood, West Yorkshire, dates back to Frank’s father, Jack, who acquired it in 1955. Following Jack’s untimely passing in 1956, Frank’s mother, Mabel, stepped in to uphold the pub’s tradition of strong landladies, with Frank supporting her in various bar duties.
In 1997, when Mabel moved into a care facility, Frank was faced with the decision of finding a replacement. Refusing to let go of the reins, Frank obtained the license in 1998, becoming possibly the oldest active landlord in the country and even the world. Prior to his pub career, Frank worked in the textile industry before embracing the pub life, a path he has never regretted.
Recognized for his exceptional service by the local Camra branch two years ago, Frank marked his 97th birthday with a modest celebration among friends, jokingly offering to buy the first pint himself and leaving the rest to his guests.
