Officer connected to Nowak case resigns amid controversy

An officer linked to the Henry Nowak case has tendered their resignation.

Nowak, an 18-year-old student, was fatally stabbed by 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa in Southampton on December 3, 2025. Distressing video footage captured him being handcuffed while in critical condition.

Digwa falsely reported to authorities that he was a victim of a racially motivated assault. He was recently found guilty of murder.

A representative from Hampshire Police confirmed today that one of the officers connected to the incident has stepped down. They stated, “Three officers remain in service, with one officer resigning. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has identified them all as witnesses, so they are not currently under any restrictions.”

In video footage from officers’ body cameras during the incident, Nowak can be heard repeatedly stating, “I’ve been stabbed,” to which an officer responded, “Don’t think you have, mate.”

Sir Keir Starmer expressed feeling dismayed witnessing the police handcuffing Nowak and stressed the necessity for thorough scrutiny of the case. The Prime Minister called for an investigation into how allegations of racism influenced police actions.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is set to release a report on the case within the next three months. The investigation includes reviewing extensive body-worn camera footage and evidence presented during Digwa’s trial.

Sir Keir emphasized the importance of the IOPC’s investigation, highlighting the pressing need to address serious concerns, particularly regarding the impact of racism allegations on decision-making in this instance.

Digwa received a life sentence, serving a minimum of 21 years in prison for using a ceremonial knife with a 21cm blade, described in court as a “Sikh dagger,” to stab Nowak.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, addressing the Commons, emphasized the importance of preventing community discord following the tragic incident. She condemned the crime while urging against generalizing individuals based on their faith or ethnicity.

Mark Nowak, father of the victim, urged against using his son’s death to fuel further discord, hatred, or tension following Digwa’s sentencing.
