Next Upgrades Profit Forecast Following Sales Surge

Fashion retailer Next has revised its profit forecast upwards for the third time in 2026, attributing the boost to a surge in sales driven by the recent heatwave. Revenue increased by 9.2% in the 13-week period ending in early August, far exceeding the projected 4% growth and translating to a £70 million additional profit. The company now anticipates annual sales to surpass £6 billion, with profits expected to climb by over 7% to reach £1.24 billion.

Within the UK, sales rose by 2.8%, with online transactions spearheading the growth while in-store sales declined. Concurrently, online international sales skyrocketed by 37% compared to the previous year, as per the latest investor update.

Next attributed its exceptional performance to the unexpectedly warm weather in the UK during June and July, along with increased investment in effective marketing campaigns. Additionally, the release of pent-up demand in the Middle East and Northern Europe, following a sluggish start to the year in those regions, contributed to the company’s success.

Although Next’s overseas business was impacted by the Iran conflict that commenced in February, particularly affecting the Middle East market, the company plans to counterbalance the effects by raising prices in select international markets by up to 8%.

Market analysts and industry experts have lauded Next’s ability to surpass expectations, with shares of the company rising by 7% in early trading. Richard Hunter of Interactive Investor praised Next’s strategic acumen and its capacity to capitalize on emerging opportunities within the global market.

Overall, the positive sales performance aligns with the broader trend seen in the retail sector, with increased consumer spending on products like air conditioning and apparel. This upturn in sales reflects improved consumer sentiment, buoyed by factors such as favorable weather conditions and positive expectations surrounding political leadership changes.

The news of Next’s profit surge highlights the resilience of the retail industry amidst evolving market conditions, underscoring the company’s agility in navigating challenges and seizing growth opportunities.
