In a notable experience, Dominic Watters participated in a national food investigation by indulging in a serving of scrambled eggs at Yolk Farm near York. Describing it as the best scrambled eggs he has ever had, Dominic contrasted the quality of food at the farm with the limited options available in his residential area in Kent. He highlighted the lack of fresh and healthy food choices, emphasizing the prevalence of processed and imported foods like breaded chicken. The absence of grocery stores like KFC or Tesco further contributed to what he referred to as a “food desert.”
Lucy Antal, at Kindling Farm near Knowsley, discussed the challenges of food deserts where individuals must travel long distances to access fresh produce. She underscored the importance of easy access to healthy foods for public health compliance, especially in areas where unhealthy options are more prevalent.
The Citizen Advisory Council (CAC), including members like Dominic and Maria Chukwu-Nsofor, engaged with various individuals nationwide to compile a comprehensive report titled ‘From the Ground Up.’ The report calls for a transformative food strategy to promote fairness and equality across the country.
New polling data, commissioned by The Food Foundation (FF) and the Food Farming and Countryside Commission (FFCC), revealed strong public support for government intervention in the food sector. The majority of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the current food system and advocated for healthier food options, fair pricing for farmers, and government action to ensure access to nutritious foods.
The report sheds light on the challenges faced by diverse groups, from caregivers to vulnerable populations, due to limited access to healthy food options. It also highlights community-driven initiatives that are addressing these issues effectively.
Farming Minister Stephen Morgan commended the CAC’s work for highlighting essential values in the food system and recognizing grassroots efforts that promote a sustainable and inclusive food environment.

His reflections emphasize the disparities in access to food and resources, calling for a comprehensive approach to building a food system that benefits everyone.
