A committee of MPs has raised concerns about the influx of questionable cosmetic items entering the UK marketplace through Amazon, labeling them as potential “snake oil” products. The committee delved into the unregulated cosmetics sector in the UK, highlighting instances such as a skin cream manufactured from toxic frogs.
During a session with the Science, Innovation, and Technology Committee, it was disclosed that Kambo, a hazardous substance sourced from the giant monkey frog, was among the illicit products being acquired from unauthorized vendors. Richard Knight from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute emphasized the risks posed by unregulated sellers on the Amazon platform, emphasizing the need for consumer protection.
Knight singled out Kambo as a product he would caution against due to its harmful nature, derived from secretions of Amazonian tree frogs. The substance, extracted by scraping the skin of live frogs, has been linked to severe health complications including fatalities, seizures, and organ failures. Contrary to reports, Amazon clarified that they do not retail Kambo.
In addition to Kambo, Knight highlighted other concerning products like UV nail gels and skin lighteners, categorizing them as “snake oil” types that may be misleadingly assumed as safe due to their American origin. He underscored the varying regulatory standards between countries and the potential dangers of assuming safety based on product origin.
The issue of unsafe cosmetic practices extended beyond the UK, with reports of severe consequences from procedures like tummy tucks and Brazilian butt lifts. The committee also addressed the alarming trend of injecting fillers into the penis for cosmetic purposes, stressing the need for tighter regulations to prevent harm and safeguard public health.
Amazon responded to the allegations by reaffirming its commitment to customer safety, stating that all products on their platform must adhere to legal requirements and strict policies. They highlighted their rigorous screening process for sellers, emphasizing the use of advanced technology and human reviews to detect and remove fraudulent entities promptly.
The Mirror’s advocacy for stricter regulations in the cosmetic industry, dubbed “Ban the Cosmetic Cowboys,” underscored the urgency for comprehensive oversight to prevent further harm to consumers. The discussions at the committee hearing underscored the critical need for enhanced regulatory measures to curb the proliferation of unsafe cosmetic products in the market.
