“MP Exposes ‘Rip-Off’ Scheme in UK Aluminium Recycling”

An MP has brought to light an alarming “rip-off” scheme related to the recycling of scrap aluminium. Tessa Munt has called for a comprehensive overhaul of the recycling process, which involves a substantial 14 billion cans annually. She has raised concerns that councils are being deceived, resulting in them losing out on significant funds that could benefit their communities. Notably, she found that neighboring councils with different recycling strategies experienced vastly different financial outcomes, with one gaining £1 million annually while the other received nothing. Moreover, some UK authorities are sending aluminium to China instead of recycling it domestically, leading to financial gains for foreign competitors.

Munt revealed that despite aluminium being classified as a critical mineral, insufficient efforts are being made to retain it within the UK. In an interview with the Mirror, she emphasized the need for the government to crack down on profit-driven scrap merchants exporting aluminium without considering national interests.

Expressing her dismay, Munt highlighted the lack of transparency surrounding the fate of the UK’s scrap aluminium, with billions of pounds worth being exported for recycling annually while the country spends billions importing aluminium. This prompted her to investigate the matter further.

Having personally collected scrap aluminium for charity over the past 25 years, Munt discovered that councils nationwide are responsible for handling the 14 billion aluminium cans used annually. After sending Freedom of Information requests to all councils in the country, she uncovered discrepancies in how councils handle recycling, leading to potential financial losses.

Munt stressed the need for councils to exercise greater control over their aluminium recycling operations to prevent financial losses. In her quest for understanding, she visited the Novelis recycling complex in Warrington, where she witnessed the transformation of scrap aluminium cans into recycled ingots destined for reuse in new cans. She commended the advanced facilities at Novelis, partly funded by the government, and advocated for more stringent measures to retain aluminium within the UK rather than exporting it to distant markets like China.
