Motorists Await Prompt Transfer of Fuel Savings

Petrol stations have been instructed to quickly transfer fuel savings to numerous motorists who have been enduring high prices at the pump. The surging oil prices triggered by the Middle East conflict have burdened drivers, even though the cost of oil has decreased from its peak above $112 per barrel. Concerns remain that motorists have not fully benefited from the drop in oil prices.

According to the Competition and Markets Authority, there is no evidence that retailers adjusted their pricing strategies to capitalize on the crisis. Their analysis indicates that the majority of the pump price increase in March and April can be attributed to higher wholesale prices. Despite this, the CMA noted that fuel retailers’ profit margins have remained historically high and, in some cases, increased slightly in April.

Motorists are encouraged by the regulator to utilize the fuel finder tool to locate the most cost-effective pump prices nearby, potentially saving an average of £9 per tank. Sarah Cardell, the CEO of the CMA, expressed concerns about the financial strain on drivers due to pump prices, emphasizing the need for effective competition in the sector to prevent drivers from overpaying.

Recent escalations in the Middle East, such as Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, have caused oil prices to rise. Before the conflicts, Brent crude was trading around $93 per barrel, having previously surged above $112 during the crisis due to concerns about supply disruptions.

Petrol prices reached 159.53p per liter recently, marking a significant increase since the start of the Middle East conflict in late February. On the other hand, the average diesel price has decreased by almost 8p per liter since peaking in mid-April. The cost of a tank of petrol for a typical family car has risen by £14.60 since late February, while diesel now costs £22.75 more than at the onset of the Iran conflict.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, mentioned the positive impact of oil prices stabilizing below $100 per barrel for drivers. He highlighted the need for retailers to adjust their prices accordingly. Drivers are advised to use tools like the myRAC app to find the best fuel prices consistently.

Luke Bosdet, the AA’s spokesperson on road fuel prices, emphasized the need for the competition watchdog to investigate pricing behavior at fuel stations due to the persistently high profit margins. This scrutiny is essential to ensure fair pricing practices for consumers.
