“Mother’s Heartbreaking Loss Spurs Water Safety Campaign”

After the life support of eight-year-old Josh Hillstead was turned off, his mother placed her hand over his heart until it ceased beating. Tragically, just one hour and 44 minutes shy of his ninth birthday, Josh passed away after going for a paddle in the River Arrow during a summer evening dog walk in Alcester. His brave sister, Caitlyn-Ann, then 10 years old, attempted to save him by jumping into the river, risking her life in the process.

Despite Caitlyn-Ann’s efforts, Josh slipped from her grasp as they struggled to return to the riverbank together. Since that heartbreaking incident, Becky Hinde, aged 41, has been advocating to prevent other families from enduring similar tragic losses. She has now joined the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to raise awareness about water safety, particularly in the midst of the current heatwave.

Drowning incidents in the UK have reached alarming levels, prompting organizations like the RNLI and Royal Life Saving Society UK to collaborate with the Mirror in urging the government to take decisive action. Becky emphasized the indiscriminate nature of water hazards, stressing the importance of vigilance and understanding the risks associated with water activities.

Recounting the harrowing experience, Becky described receiving the devastating news from Josh’s father, Carl, and the frantic rush to the hospital where Josh was being treated. Despite efforts to revive him, Josh’s condition deteriorated, leading to the heart-wrenching decision to let him go peacefully. Becky and Carl held Josh as he passed away, surrounded by love and heartfelt farewells.

Reflecting on Josh’s joyful spirit and the void left by his absence, Becky shared fond memories of her son and the profound impact he had on those around him. She expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community, including gestures like a classmate climbing a mountain in Josh’s memory. Determined to prevent further tragedies, Becky emphasized the critical need for water safety education and awareness to safeguard lives.

The Mirror’s ‘Save Lives For Sam’ campaign aims to address the growing drowning crisis in the UK by advocating for measures such as compulsory water safety lessons in schools, a national awareness campaign, enhanced lifesaving equipment at high-risk waterways, the implementation of Sam’s Law, and the appointment of a dedicated Minister for Water Safety.
