“Mother-Son Duo Makes World Cup History”

A groundbreaking moment in sports history occurred as a mother and son duo from New Zealand participated in a World Cup tournament together. Tyler Bindon, a defender for Nottingham Forest, entered the field as a substitute for New Zealand in their World Cup match against Iran. Tyler’s mother, Jenny Bindon, formerly a goalkeeper for New Zealand, had previously represented her country in various prestigious soccer events.

Tyler, aged 21, made his World Cup debut during New Zealand’s 2-2 draw with Iran, with his proud parents witnessing the momentous occasion from the stands in Inglewood, California. Taking to Instagram, Tyler expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent New Zealand on a global platform and shared his joy in being part of the first mother-son pair to compete in a World Cup.

Raised in the Los Angeles FC academy system, Tyler comes from a family with a strong athletic background. His father, Grant, led New Zealand’s volleyball team, prompting the family’s move to California when Jenny assumed a coaching role at UCLA. Jenny revealed that Tyler’s exposure to top-level soccer from a young age fueled his ambition to become a professional footballer.

Looking ahead, the New Zealand national team, known as the All Whites, is set to face Egypt in Vancouver. The Bindons join a select group of father-son duos who have graced the World Cup stage, such as Claudio and Gio Reyna of the United States and Erling Haaland, a rising star from Manchester City and the son of former World Cup participant Alf-Inge Haaland.
