An incumbent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the United Conservative Party in Alberta has disclosed that he supported advancing with a binding referendum on whether the province should secede from Canada. Jason Stephan, the MLA for Red Deer-South, revealed his stance on the upcoming referendum during a town hall event at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in Red Deer, as reported by CBC News.
Stephan explained that his preference for Option 2, which advocates for initiating the legal process for a provincial referendum on separation, stems from his desire to see Canada address its current issues. He emphasized the need for Ottawa to address existing problems, citing concerns such as escalating national debt and the need for improved governance.
Expressing his long-standing support for an independence referendum, Stephan highlighted the importance of compelling the federal government to address issues that require attention. He emphasized the necessity for change and accountability in the government’s actions.
Jason Stephan, who previously served as Premier Danielle Smith’s constitutional affairs adviser before spring, has been vocal in his efforts to draw attention to Alberta’s concerns. He has actively urged Albertans to engage in discussions and sign petitions calling for a referendum on the province’s potential separation from Canada.
The referendum’s tenth question poses the choice between Alberta remaining a Canadian province or initiating the legal process for a binding provincial referendum on separation. Voters can opt for either Option 1, supporting Alberta’s continued provincial status, or Option 2, advocating for a referendum on separation.

When asked how he would vote if Option 2 succeeds in the fall referendum, Stephan clarified that his primary goal is for Canada to improve and become a prosperous nation. He emphasized the importance of effective governance, fairness, and constitutional reforms.
While acknowledging his party’s stance on maintaining a united Alberta within Canada, Stephan expressed his hopes for unity but highlighted the need for significant improvements at the federal level. He emphasized the necessity for the federal government to address pressing issues.
Town Hall Meeting
Stephan invited constituents to a town hall meeting to discuss the referendum’s ten questions and promote civil discourse on differing opinions. He emphasized the importance of respecting all viewpoints and the significance of the ongoing referendum in drawing attention to Alberta’s concerns.
Stephan’s recent newsletter to constituents clarified that Question 10 does not center on independence but on the possibility of a future referendum. He highlighted that both Options 1 and 2 could coexist as voters might support Alberta’s provincial status while advocating for a future referendum to address federal shortcomings.

The town hall event attracted approximately 100 attendees with varied opinions on separation, reflecting a mix of support and opposition. Discussions included concerns about the referendum wording, potential economic impacts, and the implications of different outcomes.
During the event, one attendee inquired about the UCP caucus potentially influencing Premier Smith to support Option 2, receiving applause from the audience. Premier Smith, however, confirmed her preference for Option 1.
At a separate news conference, Premier Smith addressed questions about party cohesion following Stephan’s public support for Option 2. She emphasized the diversity of opinions within the party while reaffirming the party’s unified position.
Albertans will have the opportunity to express their views during the referendum on October 19, providing a platform for citizens to voice their preferences regarding Alberta’s future within Canada.
