Andy Burnham is not intending to challenge the Prime Minister within the initial 72 hours following a potential victory in the Makerfield by-election, as per information from the Mirror. The Labour leadership candidate has expressed willingness to participate in any competition to succeed Keir Starmer. Nevertheless, there are no current plans to announce a challenge immediately after the Makerfield by-election victory.
Instead, the Mayor of Greater Manchester aims to convince Starmer to outline a timetable for his departure, maintaining positive relations with Downing Street despite intentions to remove the PM. A source within Burnham’s team dismissed claims of an immediate challenge, highlighting Burnham’s preference for open communication with Starmer post-election.
While various cabinet ministers have actively campaigned for Burnham, the Prime Minister has yet to visit the area, despite commitments to do so. Burnham had previously declared his intent to enter a leadership contest during an appearance on Question Time.
In the upcoming Makerfield by-election, Burnham is the favored candidate, competing against Reform’s Robert Kenyon, known for controversial comments about women. The PM has hinted at offering Burnham a Cabinet position upon his return to Westminster, cautioning against leadership challenges.
Starmer expressed admiration for Burnham’s potential role in the government, with the PM indicating plans to engage in discussions post-weekend. A senior source ruled out Burnham accepting a role, emphasizing his separation from governmental shortcomings.
Meanwhile, Wes Streeting hinted at a possible leadership challenge against Starmer, suggesting a decision could materialize soon. Streeting emphasized the need for clarity in leadership, highlighting his readiness to trigger a contest if necessary.
Streeting, who has urged Starmer to provide a resignation timeline, asserted having the required support to initiate a challenge. He delayed triggering a contest due to the ongoing by-election, emphasizing the importance of resolving uncertainties in leadership promptly.
