Over the past month, I’ve engaged in numerous conversations, ranging from doorstep chats to encounters in supermarkets and on the streets. Some individuals have expressed their intention to vote for the Labour party in the upcoming election, providing a boost of motivation to continue canvassing. Conversely, there are those who have shared reasons for not supporting the party, allowing for open dialogue to understand differing perspectives.
Many constituents in Makerfield remain undecided, with a significant portion expressing disillusionment with the current political system, regardless of their voting preferences. The prevailing sentiment is that Westminster neglects towns like Makerfield, leading to a disconnect between policymakers and local communities.
Reflecting on the inadequacies of the central government, I emphasize the need for decision-making to be more localized, closer to the communities it impacts. My tenure as Mayor of Greater Manchester has been marked by achievements like public control of the bus network, fair treatment during the pandemic, and advocacy for social justice causes.
Despite these accomplishments, the ongoing struggle for essential resources and fair treatment highlights the systemic flaws that hinder progress in places like Makerfield. The prevalent consensus is that Westminster fails to prioritize the needs of towns like ours, neglecting crucial aspects such as employment opportunities, affordable housing, public safety, and youth empowerment.
If given the chance to represent our community in the upcoming election, I am committed to amplifying our voices and ensuring that our concerns are heard and addressed effectively. The recent developments in Makerfield, including the government’s funding for waste clearance initiatives, underscore the significance of empowering local communities and championing grassroots efforts.
Looking ahead, I remain dedicated to supporting small businesses, revitalizing high streets, and fostering community cohesion through initiatives that benefit residents across Greater Manchester. As we approach the election, my focus is on advocating for policies that resonate with the needs and aspirations of our constituents, striving for a more inclusive and responsive governance model.
