A man who had previously saved a police officer’s life shortly before winning £1 million in the EuroMillions lottery has tragically passed away in a suspected hit-and-run incident while cycling.
Anthony Canty, aged 39, administered CPR to a police officer who suffered a heart attack on a bus in April 2020. Just a month later, Anthony became a millionaire after winning £1 million in the EuroMillions lottery.
Following his lottery win, the police officer, who had been airlifted to the hospital and spent five days in intensive care before recovering fully, expressed that “good karma happens to good people.”
Six years after his life-altering lottery win, Anthony was fatally struck in a collision in Tiptree, Essex, while riding his bicycle at 6:30 a.m. on May 21. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries four days later.
An 18-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and failing to stop at the scene. The individual remains under investigation as the police continue their inquiries.
Tributes for Anthony, described as a “true gentleman,” flooded social media platforms. Lynne Beckham-Briggs, 54, sister of David Beckham, expressed her sorrow on Facebook, remembering Anthony as a cherished individual.
Friends and acquaintances, including Gary Hill and Sophie Shane, shared their disbelief and sadness over the untimely death of Anthony, emphasizing his positive and amiable nature.
Anthony, survived by his two daughters with wife Katie, won the £1 million EuroMillions prize on May 5, 2020. Initially thinking he had won £100,000, he was ecstatic when Katie confirmed they were, in fact, millionaires.
The couple celebrated their win with champagne and a giant check. Anthony intended to use the money to purchase a new home and take his daughters to Disneyland, while also planning to continue working at a local building materials supplier.
Essex Police have urged any witnesses to come forward with information regarding the fatal collision. Detectives are specifically seeking details about a black Ford KA that was in the vicinity at the time of the incident on the morning of May 21.
Individuals with relevant information, CCTV footage, dashcam recordings, or any other pertinent details are encouraged to contact the authorities, quoting reference number 174 dated May 21.
