A vicious killer who exerted control over and took advantage of a defenseless father and former DJ through a prolonged period of torment and mistreatment has been sentenced to prison.
Ashley Crowder, aged 37, subjected Graham Cox, also 37, to abuse over several weeks before ultimately causing his death through physical assault and strangulation in Bolton in March 2024.
Today at Bolton Crown Court, Crowder was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years after being convicted in June of murder, assault, and theft related to Mr. Cox.
Mr. Cox’s lifeless body was found concealed under a blanket on the sofa at Crowder’s residence in Farnworth on March 4, 2024. He had suffered numerous internal and external injuries, with 14 of them attributed to a weapon, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The court was informed that Mr. Cox’s demise resulted from the cumulative impact of a sustained pattern of cruelty inflicted upon the severely disabled and physically frail man, with strangulation being the final fatal act carried out by Crowder.
During the initial part of his sentencing on July 29, Crowder, brought to Bolton Crown Court, declined to enter the courtroom to hear statements from Mr. Cox’s relatives. He also opted not to respond to most inquiries during police interrogations and chose not to testify during his trial.
At the sentencing by Judge Nicholas Clarke KC, the courtroom was vacant again as Crowder, present in the building, refused to appear. Prosecutor Mukul Chawla KC highlighted Crowder’s repeated refusal to face the court or the family of the victim.
The judge noted the family’s dismay at Crowder’s conduct and his lack of compassion or remorse for their suffering. Mr. Cox, a talented footballer and artist, had faced health issues and addiction, becoming especially vulnerable by early 2024 after losing his home.
Leading up to February 2024, Mr. Cox was effectively held captive at Crowder’s place, where he was subjected to demands for money, theft of benefits, and physical abuse. On February 24, 2024, Mr. Cox sought help at the Urban Care and Neighbourhood Centre in a distressed state, revealing the abuse he had endured.
Subsequently, on March 5, 2024, authorities received a tip about a man’s death due to severe injuries at a flat on Barton Walk. Crowder initially claimed he was about to call for medical help but failed to do so promptly after the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Naismith from Greater Manchester Police condemned Crowder’s exploitation of Mr. Cox’s vulnerabilities, emphasizing the need for justice for victims of such crimes and expressing solidarity with Mr. Cox’s family.
The sentencing was intended to provide the family with some closure and to demonstrate the commitment to pursuing perpetrators who target and harm vulnerable individuals.
