“Labour veteran Sir George Howarth honored for decades of public service”

Keir Starmer has honored the memory of Sir George Howarth, acknowledging his extensive public service following the passing of the 77-year-old Labour veteran.

Sir George, a former government minister, dedicated almost four decades to serving as a Member of Parliament, starting from his election to represent the constituency of Knowsley North in 1986. He concluded his parliamentary career at the 2024 general election as the MP for Knowsley.

In a statement, the Prime Minister praised Sir George’s commitment to his party, country, and constituents, expressing solidarity with his family during this challenging period.

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle lamented the recent loss of Sir George, describing him as a significant figure in the House of Commons. Sir Lindsay reminisced about campaigning for Sir George during the 1986 by-election, emphasizing his political acumen and the impact of his contributions.

Deputy Labour leader Lucy Powell shared her sorrow at the news, highlighting Sir George’s political dedication and community-centered approach during his nearly four-decade tenure as an MP.

Anneliese Midgley, the current Labour MP for Knowsley, expressed deep sadness over Sir George’s passing, offering condolences to his family, friends, and former colleagues.

Catherine McKinnell, the schools minister, remembered Sir George as a cherished colleague, noting his warmth and wit, and extended her sympathies to his loved ones.

Throughout his parliamentary career, Sir George served on the Panel of Chairs, overseeing debates and committees. He also held ministerial positions during the early years of Tony Blair’s premiership, contributing to the Home Office and the Northern Ireland Office.

In recognition of his service, Sir George was knighted in the 2019 Birthday Honours for his parliamentary and political achievements.

Labour retained the Knowsley seat in the last general election, with Ms Midgley securing a significant majority of 18,319 votes.
