Labour MP Bridget Phillipson Frustrated by Party Distractions

Bridget Phillipson expressed frustration over the distraction caused by ongoing discussions about Labour leadership and the Peter Mandelson scandal, which she believes are overshadowing important policies. She highlighted the achievement of providing 10 million free breakfasts to children across England, aiming to alleviate financial burdens and morning childcare stress for parents.

However, this significant milestone occurs amidst a divided Labour Party, with Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham competing to succeed Keir Starmer. Despite the distractions, Phillipson emphasized the government’s commitment to lifting a record number of children out of poverty through initiatives like ending the two-child limit and expanding free school meals to all families on Universal Credit.

Phillipson also criticized Streeting’s plan to revive New Labour’s Sure Start centers, expressing disappointment as she believes the current Best Start Family Hubs incorporate the best practices from Sure Start while adapting to modern parenting challenges.

Furthermore, Phillipson criticized Reform UK for supporting tax breaks for private schools but opposing free breakfast clubs, emphasizing the government’s role in supporting families during tough times. The government aims to implement free breakfast clubs in all state primary schools by 2029, benefiting over 300,000 children so far.

In a proactive move, Phillipson will communicate progress on the breakfast club rollout to all schools in England. This initiative aligns with Rachel Reeves’ Great British Summer Saving scheme, which includes VAT reductions and free bus travel for children aged five to 15 in August.
