King Charles Honors Manx Language in Isle of Man Visit

King Charles displayed his impressive linguistic abilities during his inaugural trip to the Isle of Man as monarch today, showcasing his skills in the Manx language. He engaged in conversations in French with a native speaker outside the island’s parliament, Tynwald, where he also addressed the members about the significance of the Manx Language Year.

During his visit, King Charles expressed his awareness of the importance of the Manx Language Year and humorously hoped that he hadn’t unintentionally disrupted the celebration of the language. He visited Tynwald, one of the world’s oldest continuous legislatures, where he underscored the enduring partnership between the Crown and the people of the Isle of Man.

Emphasizing the historical ties, King Charles mentioned the first royal visit to the island by his ancestor, Prince Albert, in 1847. Following the formal welcome, he interacted with the public, conversing with individuals in different languages, including French. The King explored the Douglas Promenade, a renowned landmark in the Manx capital, and commemorated the 150th year of the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway.

As the Isle of Man’s Head of State and Lord of Mann, King Charles reiterated the special relationship between the monarchy and the island. His visit, which included various engagements and interactions with the local community, highlighted the historical significance and cultural richness of the Isle of Man.
