Joni Mitchell Officially Becomes U.S. Citizen

After more than sixty years since leaving Canada, iconic singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has officially obtained U.S. citizenship. The 82-year-old musician revealed this milestone on Instagram and X, sharing a photo and video from her naturalization ceremony. The image captures Mitchell beaming in a red beret and sunglasses, holding a small American flag pinned to her cardigan, while the video shows her receiving applause as she approaches during the ceremony. Her caption simply read, “A journey that began 62 years ago.”

Initially known as Roberta Joan Anderson and born in Fort Macleod, Alta., in 1943, Mitchell relocated to the United States in the mid-1960s following a brief marriage to American musician Chuck Mitchell. She resided in Detroit and New York before ultimately settling in California, where she played a pivotal role in the Laurel Canyon music scene. While currently residing in Santa Barbara, Calif., she also maintains a second home on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.

Renowned for songs like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” as well as her acclaimed 1971 album “Blue,” Mitchell’s career has evolved from her early days as a folk singer in Toronto coffeehouses to becoming one of the most influential songwriters in history. With an impressive catalog of 19 studio albums, her achievements include 11 Grammys, five Juno Awards, and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Mitchell’s recent acquisition of U.S. citizenship has sparked interest, given her outspoken political views in recent times. At a 2024 Hollywood Bowl performance, Mitchell expressed her sentiments about then-U.S. President Donald Trump and encouraged the audience to vote, lamenting her inability to vote as a Canadian immigrant. This move to citizenship does not signify a departure from her Canadian roots, as both Canada and the U.S. permit dual citizenship, allowing Mitchell to retain her Canadian passport.

While some celebrated Mitchell’s decision on social media, others questioned the timing, considering the strained U.S.-Canada relations and Mitchell’s vocal criticism of Trump. The news elicited mixed reactions, with some users expressing excitement and others voicing disapproval or skepticism. Despite the varying responses, Mitchell remains an influential figure in the music industry, with her life story potentially coming to the big screen in a biopic currently in development, featuring director Cameron Crowe and actress Meryl Streep.

In 2015, Mitchell faced a health setback with a brain aneurysm affecting her speech and mobility. After years of recovery, she made a triumphant return to public performance in 2022. Her contributions to music and her enduring legacy continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
