Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have resulted in 32 fatalities and 40 injuries, marking one of the most destructive attacks during the conflict, causing widespread panic as residents evacuate the southern region.
The recent surge in violence comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration that Israel would intensify its military operations against Hezbollah, leading to an increased deployment of troops into Lebanon.
Hezbollah has escalated its missile assaults on Israeli forces in northern Israel, targeting civilian areas, while claiming ongoing negotiations with their backers in Tehran. Simultaneously, Hezbollah reported Israeli forces entering the southern town of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah as part of expanding ground maneuvers.
Casualties include 14 individuals in Burj al-Shamali near Tyre, five in Kawthariyat al-Riz, four in Habbush, six in Maarakeh, and two in Salaa. Reports of heavy explosions emerged from the Lebanese city of Nabatieh, among the 50 towns warned by Israel of imminent attacks.
Despite the hostilities, Washington and Tehran are nearing the final stages of a memorandum of understanding, although conflicting demands hinder progress. The U.S. seeks an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the release of the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran has yet to fully accept the nuclear terms.
Tehran advocates for the inclusion of Lebanon and Hezbollah in any durable peace deal, which has fueled the recent surge in Israeli assaults on the militant group. The Middle East has witnessed setbacks in various ceasefires, including Israel-Hezbollah, U.S.-Iran, and Israel-Hamas in Gaza.
In a separate incident, Israel eliminated the commander of Hamas’s military branch, Mohammed Odeh, in Gaza following a lengthy tracking operation. The attack resulted in the deaths of three Palestinians and numerous injuries in a bustling market area of Gaza City.
Israel’s military and intelligence agency targeted buildings used by Odeh after monitoring his movements for months, with Hamas yet to issue a response.
The ongoing violence includes continuous Israeli strikes on Gaza despite a standing ceasefire with Hamas since October. Meanwhile, Israel’s incursions into Lebanon and U.S. actions have drawn criticism from Tehran, citing a breakdown of trust after recent U.S. strikes in southern Iran.
Iran has warned of a robust retaliation against U.S. actions, hinting at potential responses beyond regional borders, heightening concerns of a broader conflict in the Middle East.
As Israel and Tehran escalate tensions, the U.S. and Iran are negotiating a memorandum to resume movement through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been restricted since the onset of U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 8.
