“IOPC Investigates Bristol House Explosion Deaths”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated an investigation into the tragic deaths of a woman and her former partner in a house explosion in Bristol. Jo Shaw, aged 35, lost her life due to severe injuries following an intentional detonation by her ex-partner, Ryan Kelly, 41, at her residence on Sterncourt Road on May 3, resulting in both their deaths.

Ryan Kelly, previously associated with a local drugs gang, arrived at Shaw’s home reportedly carrying an explosive device, which he then detonated, causing the fatal outcome. According to a neighbor, Shaw had instructed a child in the house to play outside on a trampoline during a dispute just before the explosion occurred.

The IOPC disclosed that they are examining the interactions between Ms. Shaw, Mr. Kelly, and the Avon and Somerset Police leading up to the incident. Concerns were raised about ongoing harassment by Kelly towards Shaw, with neighbors indicating prior police involvement due to Shaw’s complaints.

Avon and Somerset Police have acknowledged the explosion as a deliberate act, classifying Shaw’s death as a homicide. The police force confirmed that no other suspects are being sought in relation to the incident. Additionally, three individuals, including a child, sustained minor injuries during the blast.

The investigation will delve into past incidents spanning a five-year period, starting from May 2021, to ascertain the circumstances and police engagement preceding the tragic events. Derrick Campbell, the director of the IOPC, expressed condolences to those affected and stressed the importance of an impartial inquiry to uncover the events leading up to the devastating incident.
