Dookeran cited personal and family reasons for her decision to step back from the race after careful consideration. The Green Party initiated its five-month leadership contest on June 11, following the announcement by current leader Elizabeth May of her intention to resign in November 2025. May, the sole Green MP in the House of Commons, has led the party since 2006. After stepping down in 2009 and being succeeded by Annamie Paul in 2020, May resumed co-leadership with Jonathan Pedneault in 2022.
Pedneault resigned in April 2025, prompting the latest developments within the party. Dookeran, with a background in provincial Green politics, withdrew from the leadership race, while Morrice, who previously served as an MP, lost his seat in the recent federal election but was later appointed deputy leader of the federal Greens.
