“Gap Year Nightmare: Brain Injury Erases Young Woman’s Memory”

A young woman’s memory has been erased due to a serious brain injury sustained in a scooter accident during her gap year in India. Olivia North, 21, experienced a subdural hematoma and a 3.6mm brain bleed following the incident in Goa on May 5. Upon receiving the distressing news, her father, Nic, immediately flew to her bedside in the hospital.

MRI scans later revealed a significant injury to Olivia’s left side temporal lobe, affecting her memory and balance functions. She now struggles with both long and short-term memory loss, even forgetting her cherished pet dog. While her condition is gradually improving, Olivia will need to remain in South Asia for an extended period before she can return to the UK.

Nic expressed concerns over the limited healthcare services in India, citing Olivia’s premature discharge from intensive care due to bed shortages despite her ongoing critical condition. He emphasized Olivia’s severe memory loss, including forgetting details about her past life and recent events.

Currently under the care of a skilled neurosurgeon at Vision Hospital, Mapusa, Olivia cannot fly back to the UK until her medical condition stabilizes to avoid risks associated with air travel and brain injuries. Nic has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover the escalating medical expenses, with donations already reaching nearly £4,000.

Acknowledging the substantial care requirements ahead, Nic plans to provide full-time support for Olivia during her recovery and anticipates ongoing treatment at a specialized brain injury unit upon their return. He highlighted the financial strain caused by potential income reduction due to caregiving responsibilities and sought financial assistance to cover various expenses.

Supporters can contribute to Olivia’s recovery fund through the GoFundMe page linked above.
