Football enthusiasts are coming together to raise funds for a statue commemorating Kevin Keegan at the place where he kickstarted his career before his passing due to illness. The proposed statue is intended to be erected in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, where the renowned footballer began his journey, playing over 100 matches before transferring to Liverpool in 1971 for £33,000. David Beverley, the vice chairman of The Iron Trust supporters group leading the initiative, expressed that the statue would be a fitting tribute to the football icon known as “King Kev,” who achieved legendary status in the sport.
Keegan, who passed away at the age of 75, had a distinguished career playing for various clubs including Hamburg, Southampton, and Newcastle, accumulating an impressive record of 63 international caps for England, 31 of which he served as captain. He secured numerous accolades during his time with Liverpool, including three league Division One titles, the European Cup, two Uefa Cups, and the FA Cup.
Following his playing career, Keegan managed several teams including England, Newcastle, Fulham, and Manchester City. Despite his widespread success, he maintained a strong connection with Scunthorpe, frequently returning to support fundraising efforts for the club. The community recently paid tribute to Keegan by holding a minute’s applause and laying flowers at the Attis Arena, where a book of condolence has been opened, featuring a memorable quote from Keegan expressing his deep-rooted connection to Scunthorpe United.
