A group is facing criticism for potentially igniting fireworks in dry moorlands near a reservoir before a significant wildfire erupted. Recent days have seen numerous wildfires across the country, with the Met Office forecasting continued scorching heatwave conditions, ensuring most areas remain dry, sunny, and exceptionally hot.
Disturbing images show individuals with fireworks near Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield, close to Saddleworth in Oldham, where moorland fires have now emerged. In one photo, a young woman is seen holding a rocket launcher as a firework detonates, igniting dry grasses, leading to a group rushing to the smoking moorland area.
Subsequent images depict flames rapidly spreading on a hillside at the Saddleworth location. The gathering at the reservoir was reportedly in memory of a teenager, Karl Holland, who tragically passed away in the water on Friday night.
Despite efforts by emergency teams to control the flames, locals have strongly condemned the use of fireworks in such close proximity to moorlands. Social media posts and witnesses described multiple fireworks being set off, causing fires on the ground, prompting fire crews to respond to a moorland blaze around the reservoir on Saturday night.
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service emphasized that an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the wildfire. They reiterated the importance of refraining from using disposable barbecues, lighting campfires, or setting off fireworks near moorlands due to the heightened fire risk in dry conditions.
Public warnings have been issued to avoid the affected area, with residents advised to keep windows and doors shut. A helicopter was seen dropping water onto the burning moorlands, while firefighters continue their efforts to contain and extinguish the fire with the support of various resources and partner agencies.
The collaborative response, including specialized wildfire units, off-road vehicles, and drone assistance, aims to limit the fire spread across the moorlands and ridge areas. United Utilities is actively supporting the response efforts, with firefighters remaining on-site to ensure safety and containment of the blaze.
