Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw recently disclosed that she declined an offer to direct an upcoming television adaptation of the beloved “Harry Potter” series, citing opposition to supporting transphobia. Pankiw shared a snippet of a text conversation on her Instagram account, unequivocally stating her refusal to work on the HBO project.
Expressing her stance against funding transphobic content, Pankiw emphasized the straightforwardness of her decision in the post. Notably, she clarified that the offer was for a directing role, rather than an acting opportunity.
Having helmed episodes for the acclaimed series “Black Mirror” and the comedy show “Feel Good,” as well as the film “I Used to be Funny,” Pankiw’s professional portfolio showcases her diverse directorial experience. The exchange revealing her decision is dated April 21, although the recipient of her message remains undisclosed.
Set to debut on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, the new series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is an adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s iconic fantasy book series. The controversy surrounding Rowling’s views on transgender issues has sparked criticism, with the author facing backlash for her public statements on gender and sex.
In a recent social media post, Rowling reiterated her stance on transgender identity, asserting, “Trans women aren’t women.” Her views have triggered a divide within the “Harry Potter” community, extending to actors from the film franchise and partnerships with commercial entities like Tim Hortons.
Joining Pankiw in rejecting involvement with the series, director and writer Kate Herron shared her own experience of declining offers to work on the project. Herron, known for her work on “Loki” and other popular shows, commended Pankiw’s decision and revealed that she had also turned down the opportunity multiple times.
Despite inquiries from media outlets, representatives for HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, have yet to comment on the issue of refusals impacting the show’s production. Additionally, there has been no response from Pankiw’s representative regarding further details on the text exchange.
